Education and climate: ASSEDEL responds to the call for contributions from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights

As part of the preparation of a report on the link between climate change and girls’ access to education, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights is calling on civil society to provide its observations.

ASSEDEL has responded to this call by submitting the present report.

ASSEDEL demonstrates that, on the one hand, climate change disproportionately impacts girls in the realization of their right to education, and on the other, that girls should not be perceived as mere victims.

The first part of the report explores how climate change may impact the realization of the right to education for all girls, highlighting both the direct obstacles posed by natural disasters and the impact of climate crises on already existing obstacles.

The second part of the report focuses on the role of girls in the fight against climate change. ASSEDEL stresses the importance of realizing girls’ right to education, to empower them to become proactive participants of the climate agenda.

The report is based on personal accounts and field studies led by NGOs such as Plan International, as well as reports on projects carried out by the United Nations and the Member States concerned.
