Energy Poverty in Togo: A Path to Sustainable Development

In August 2024, ASSEDEL released an important report on the growing concern of Energy Poverty in Togo, highlighting the challenges and opportunities for sustainable energy development in the country. The report emphasizes the need to address the critical gaps in energy access, particularly in rural regions, and the benefits of shifting to renewable energy sources.

Defining Energy Poverty in Togo

Energy poverty is a significant issue affecting Togo, where only about 57.2% of the population has access to electricity. The report defines energy poverty as the lack of affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy sources that are essential for improving living conditions and fostering economic development. In rural areas, traditional energy sources like firewood remain dominant, which impacts the environment and public health negatively.

The Challenges of Accessing Clean Energy

The report sheds light on the heavy reliance on fossil fuels and the negative trade balance Togo faces due to energy imports from neighboring countries. This reliance hampers the country’s development and exacerbates social inequalities. Furthermore, access to clean cooking fuels remains critically low at just 11.9%, contributing to severe health risks and environmental degradation.

Renewable Energy: A Solution for Sustainable Growth

The development of renewable energy, including solar and hydropower, is a key focus of the report. Togo’s solar potential is immense, and implementing a robust roadmap could significantly increase energy accessibility, reduce poverty, and enhance economic growth. ASSEDEL advocates for sustainable investments in renewable energy to combat climate change and support Togo’s energy independence.

Recommendations and Call to Action

The report calls for international cooperation, investment in energy infrastructure, and the education of the Togolese population on renewable energy benefits. Sustainable development in the energy sector will improve access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, reducing the poverty rate and enhancing quality of life.

This report by ASSEDEL aims to raise awareness and encourage policy changes that will help Togo transition towards clean and affordable energy solutions, benefiting both its population and environment.
