“Are you a student ? Or are you a terrorist who attempted to invade the rector’s room and occupy it? This country will no longer live a protest event in Taksim. Just as we buried terrorists in Mount Judi, in Gabar, in Mount Tendurek, and entered their “dens”, we will continue to do so in the same way from now on. There is no such thing as LGBT. Ces phrases, qui contiennent des mots criminels selon le code pénal turc1, belong to the president of Turkey, who is the guarantee of the constitution. Let’s move on to the analysis of this discourse.
- According to the statement of Minister of Internal Affairs, Suleyman Soylu, 101 out of 180 of the students arrested are not affiliated with Bogazici University. So almost half of the arrested students are actually from Bogazici University. On the other hand, you don’t need to be a student of Bogazici University, you don’t even need to be a student to protest a politically appointed rector to Bogazici University.
- Rector’s room was not invaded, students who became “so wild” could try to attack Melih Bulu when he tried to talk to them. It was not necessary to invade his room because Melih Bulu has already communicated with the students one-on-one for most of the time.

- “We entered into their dens”, the past calls of his word intend to call on the fight against the PKK and Gülen Movement. At present, the statement shows that this word is for the PKK, so the struggle of government to activists in Bogazici are similar to the struggle with the PKK. Even in a semantic context, pointing out PKK is added in a way that is disconnected from the sentence, and LGBT+ is mentioned right after this sentence. So, is LGBT+ really a terrorist organization far from national and moral values?
En Turquie, être membre des LGBT+ est très difficile, comme partout ailleurs. Selon le syndicat des Employés des Principes Moraux et des Fondations Religieuses,2ce n'est pas un droit humain de "préférer" l'homosexualité.3Cependant, selon Nihat Hatipoğlu, qui est membre du YÖK4 with the approval of Erdoğan, all kinds of people can be found in society, and according to him, we need to meet “this” with understanding. Even according to Erdoğan’s 2002 version, the rights of LGBT+ should be guaranteed. So why is LGBT+ being attacked during the Bogazici University Protests?
Réponse rapide : C’est parce qu'il n'y avait pas d'autre moyen. Erdogan’s government got stuck in the corner in economy, in social approval and of course in predicted elections.
C'est le 2 janvier 2021 que Melih Bulu a été nommé par Erdoğan recteur de l'Université Bogazici. Dans le sondage électoral réalisé par GENAR le 25 novembre 2020, près de 600 personnes sur 3000 n'ont pas précisé leur préférence. En d'autres termes, il y a un taux d'électeurs flottants d'environ 20 % selon l'enquête. Selon le sondage réalisé par Eurasia le 24 septembre 2020, le taux d'électeurs flottants est de 14%. Selon l'enquête de Metropoll, le groupe le plus important après l'AKP et le CHP est celui des électeurs flottants5.5.
75 percent of voters in the first vote of the 2018 Turkish General Elections did not vote for People’s Alliance (Cumhur Ittifaki). Selon les sondages de septembre 2020, ce taux n'a pas changé6.6Un détail à noter est que 4 millions de jeunes de la génération Z ont voté lors des élections générales de 2018, et ce sont 9,1 millions de jeunes de cette génération qui voteront lors d'une éventuelle élection fin 2021.7Ainsi, 1 électeur sur 5 fera partie de la génération Z. D'autre part, selon une étude réalisée en 2018, 71 % des électeurs qui ont voté pour l'AKP avaient plus de 32 ans. En d'autres termes, en 2018, l'AKP a reçu environ 3/4 de voix de la part des citoyens nés avant 1986.8.
En 2020, la proportion de ménages pauvres en Turquie a augmenté, passant de 10,4% à 14,4%9.9Selon DISK-AR10 10 2,2 millions de salariés ont perdu leur emploi11.11D'après les graphiques ci-dessous, l'économie turque est entrée dans une voie irréversible.
Time is not neutral, and it is currently running against Erdoğan. All this bring us these graph below12.12.
L'agitation sociale suffit à provoquer une explosion en Turquie, à l'image des pays qui se trouvent sur une ligne dangereuse. Bien que difficile à prévoir, les indicateurs économiques et démographiques confirment cela. Après avoir été l'objet de protestations pendant la pandémie, d'abord par la société de droit,13 puis par les commerçants14,14et enfin par les mineurs15,15 le gouvernement a nommé un recteur à l'université de Bogazici et a tenté, consciemment ou non, de façonner la journée autour de l'opposition des LGBT+. Cette démarche était à l'avantage du gouvernement sur plusieurs points. Tout d'abord, la communauté LGBT+ ne dispose d'aucune garantie spécifique en termes juridiques en Turquie. C'est ainsi que le ministre des affaires intérieures, Süleyman Soylu a pu accuser les membres LGBT+ d'hérésie16. 16. Secondly, the structure of Turkish society tends to react too strongly to LGBT+17. Finally, LGBT+ was tried to be worn out already. By fake news, that shows whistling while calling to pray at the Istanbul Pride18, or with alleged disrespect to the Kaaba during protests, reputation was already decreased by government. So Erdoğan and his team have a strong card which allows use religious discourse and which will be able to turn back the floating voters again. So they are again intending to marginalize an already marginalized group even more. In other saying, making LGBT+ enemy is very profitable for the government, because the government can use religious rhetoric, and the answer comes by completely rejecting religious discourse, thereby consolidating the conservative groups.
Une perspective différente
The government’s religious rhetoric paradoxically works for LGBT+ in long term. Visibility of these activist, of LGBT+ groups is %100 now in Turkey. Considering that Prides, Women’s Day Meetings, and even all meetings are made for visibility, Erdoğan’s mention of LGBT+ has made their visibility in the society 100 percent. A marginal group of people slowly finds its place in society, slowly becomes normal.
On ne sait pas ce que le cours du temps et ce qu'un monde plus intégré nous apportera, mais il est certain qu'il apportera un monde où les groupes LGBT+ seront plus visibles et familiers. Les données statistiques dans le monde montrent cela.
On ne sait pas si c'est le cours du monde ou la politique d'exclusion des gouvernements qui en est la cause, mais les mentalités changent progressivement. Il est impossible de rester neutre face à cette évolution, nous le verrons à l'avenir.
